Penny Nichols and David West performed as part of our House Concert series on February 6, 1999. They were accompanied by Mike Mullins on mandolin and guitar and Richard Greene on violin.

Like many people in the Sixties, Penny started her career as a folk singer in coffeehouses around Orange County, CA. She shared stages with many legendary artists such as Jackson Browne, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Ponies, Jennifer Warnes, Mary McCaslin, the Dillards and many others. In 1977, while working with Emitt Rhodes on a record for Elektra, Penny joined Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer band. She appeared in the movie FM with the band, toured the U.S. with them and earned a Platinum Record for her singing on Son of a Son of a Sailor. In the late Seventies and Eighties, Penny went back to school and got a degree in music and psychology from Antioch University, then went on to Harvard University and got a doctorate in music education and psychology. During the same time, she recorded and toured with many performers like Art Garfunkle, Suzi Quatro, Yvonne Elliman, Jennifer Warnes, Albert Brooks, The Credibility Gap, Steve Gillette and earned a Grammy nomination for her work on Arlo Guthrie's album The Power of Love. Penny recorded her first album, Penny's Arcade, for Buddha Records in 1967. Her 1990 album, All Life Is One, is a real treasure.

After touring nationally and releasing four albums with the Cache Valley Drifters, David West has gone on to work in concert and on record with many great artists. A short list includes: Kate Wolf, Chris Hillman, Jo-El Sonnier and John McEwen. David's recent projects include a rock album featuring David West along with guitarists Albert Lee, Steve Lukather and Waddy Wachtel, produced by drummer Russ Kunkel and a new album by Moby Grape legend Peter Lewis, produced by the Doobie Brothers' John McFee. David also has done numerous record, television and commercial sessions, as well as making his acting debut on the CBS daytime drama "The Bold and The Beautiful" where he plays a musician, of course. David's first solo album, Arcane, released in Europe in 1992 received rave notices in the European press. A follow-up album Broken Down Believers was released in late 2001. Both are wonderful albums! Other CD releases that David West has released are "Pickin' On" albums -- tribute albums to the Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Elton John and many others that feature David West on guitar, banjo, mandolin, and numerous other instruments, giving a bluegrass treatment to some well known rock and roll libraries of songs.

On February 6, 1999 PENNY NICHOLS and DAVID WEST performed folk and bluegrass music before another great crowd.

This was Penny's second time here. She said "this is my favorite gig" and proceeded to put on a great show. David West, best known for his work with the Cache Valley Drifters and the Kate Wolf Band traded sets with Penny. They were accompanied by their friends Michael Mullins on guitar and mandolin and famed fiddler Richard Greene on violin.
