SEVERIN BROWNE started off his musical career in the early 1970s as a staff writer for Motown Records and, at the urging of Barry Gordy, eventually released two albums on the Motown label. Severin's comeback album, From The Edge Of The World, was released in 1995. This album shows the growth that can come from 20 years of life's experiences. The CD is infused with an amazing flair for great melody and lyrics. Songs like "My Love Mo Betta" and "Uptown" showcase Severin's inspired soul and R&B influence, which has a strong Van Morrison feel. "Edge of The World" is a great rocker, while love songs like "Leaving You's The Hardest Thing I've Known" and "If I Loved You" show that Severin has not lost the great 70's pop feel that was such a part of his earlier recordings. Severin's newest album, This Twisted Road, is one of our very favorite albums from 2001.
Like many people in the Sixties, PENNY NICHOLS started her career as a folk singer in coffeehouses around Orange County, CA. She shared stages with many legendary artists such as Jackson Browne, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Ponies, Jennifer Warnes, Mary McCaslin, the Dillards and many others. In 1977, while working with Emitt Rhodes on a record for Elektra, Penny joined Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer band. She appeared in the movie FM with the band, toured the U.S. with them and earned a Platinum Record for her singing on Son of a Son of a Sailor. In the late Seventies and Eighties, Penny went back to school and got a degree in music and psychology from Antioch University, then went on to Harvard University and got a doctorate in music education and psychology. During the same time, she recorded and toured with many performers like Art Garfunkle, Suzi Quatro, Yvonne Elliman, Jennifer Warnes, Albert Brooks, The Credibility Gap, Steve Gillette and earned a Grammy nomination for her work on Arlo Guthrie's album The Power of Love.
One of rock's original fretless bass players, FREEBO actually plays several instruments quite proficiently -- among them, the tuba and guitar. Freebo has been in the studio and on stage with Bonnie Raitt, John Mayall, Maria Muldaur, Crosby Stills & Nash, Aaron Neville and Ringo Starr among many others. Freebo's bass playing, as well as his background vocals and occasional tuba parts have adorned over a hundred records, including Muldaur's smash multi-Platinum single "Midnight At The Oasis," all of Bonnie Raitt's early Gold albums, and tracks for over a dozen other notable artists and bands. Freebo's newest release, The End of the Beginning (Poppabo Music, 1999), is a collection of great-feeling songs spanning styles from country to reggae to second-line horn driven rock and featuring appearances by Bonnie Riatt, Paul Barrere, Catfish Hodge, Valerie Carter, Michael Jochum, Albert Lee and others.
DEBORAH McCOLL is a folk troubadour, rock singer, songwriter, and backup vocalist who is best known as the original "Reeferette" in Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band. From 1978 to 1982 she toured with Buffett, recording six albums and co-writing two songs. Road-weary and uninspired by the direction of the music industry in the New Wave Eighties, Deborah decided to pursue another of her passions. By 1988 she had completed her B.A. with a double major in music and psychology, and in 1990 she obtained her master's degree in clinical psychology. Now she's back with the release of her debut solo CD, Naked in the Garden. The album is a collection of pure songs, a shimmer of crystalline voice, the golden texture of warm guitars; Joni Mitchell color brushed with hues of Emmylou.
MIKE MULLINS is a longtime member of the Cache Valley Drifters, the premier bluegrass band in the U.S. Mike and his mandolin accompanied everyone on this night... as did Freebo and his fretless bass guitar. With Severin, Penny & Deborah singing backing vocals on each others songs as well... the whole night was just one amazing jam session that is bound to rank as one of our favorite house concerts of all time. It was also our 9th standing room only house concert of the year and was a great way to close our fourth season.
