On Saturday, March 26, 2005 we hosted "An Evening of Guitar" with Wayne Johnson and Jeff Pevar. ![]()
Grammy winning guitarist WAYNE JOHNSON (along with fellow label mates on Solid Air Records) just won the coveted Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album with the tribute CD "Henry Mancini: Pink Guitar." Wayne has been the lead guitarist for The Manhattan Transfer for many years. His own band, The Wayne Johnson Trio, has released 7 albums. Wayne has also performed and recorded with Rickie Lee Jones, John Tesh, Lee Oskar of War and many others.Wayne Johnson is an exception... scintilating... blows the audience away...Wayne's new solo acoustic venture, "One Guitar," was released in September 2003. It is an excursion into adventurous solo acoustic playing with the addition of tapping and hitting the guitar using a variety of techniques improvisationally in real time so as to resemble interplay with a real percussionist. The CD was listed #2 out of the top 20 acoustic solo guitar recordings to own by Jazziz Magazine. What separates this particular CD from many others is the quality of the writing, and the overall positive vibe I came away with after listening to this music.
JEFF PEVAR is an accomplished guitarist and songwriter who has toured and recorded with many well known musicians including Ray Charles, Joe Cocker, Shawn Colvin, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Rickie Lee Jones, Chaka Khan, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Anastasia & John, Tom Dean, Cliff Eberhardt, Doug Ingoldsby, Meatloaf, Laura Nyro, Yoko Ono and David Wilcox to name just a few.The way a guy plays guitar is a combination of dexterity and taste and inventiveness and passion. Peev has all of those things.Pevar is the "P" in David Crosby's band CPR. He was lead guitarist for the Ray Charles Orchestra through the mid 1980s and just came off a tour with Crosby Stills & Nash where he shared lead guitar duties with Stephen Stills.
