1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 OVERVIEW
Jackson Browne's musical career of the past 40 years has reached the hearts and souls of millions of fans around the globe. As a songwriter in the 1960s, Jackson's critically acclaimed songs were recorded by artists as diverse as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Steve Noonan, Nico, Tom Rush and Linda Ronstadt. As a singer-songwriter in the 1970s, Jackson's music and lyrics reached a more personal level than any of his peers, with hits like "Doctor My Eyes", "The Pretender" and "Running On Empty".
In the 1980s his political activism and social agenda seeped into his music while he quickly took on a leadership role as the social and moral consciousness of his generation. In the 1990s Jackson Browne continued to release music that reached his fans at a deeply personal and emotional level while still responding to a value system that shows true caring for the world around him. Jackson's popularity has continued into the new millenium with a critically acclaimed new album in 2002, a 2-CD retrospective in 2004, and his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
This document has been compiled by Russ Paris, with a lot of help from Jackson's fans around the world. While being officially "unauthorized," I have striven to make it as accurate and complete as possible. This FAQ could not have been compiled without the help of so many people who have given of their time in tribute to a man who has touched all our lives with his music.
This document is constantly being expanded and corrected. I know that it will never be totally complete. If you can fill in some of the missing information, PLEASE send it along to the address below. Also, if you find any errors, please let me know so I can correct them.
Enjoy,
Russ Paris (russ@jrp-graphics.com)
1.2 NEW SINCE LAST REVISION
Update 6.0 in May 2005 included a complete face lift of the page with a new design and a complete overhaul and update of the information on the site.
Update 5.5 in June 2004 added information about Jackson's 2002 release The Naked Ride Home and the 2004 release The Very Best of Jackson Browne as well as his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Update 5.0 in November 2001 incorporated nearly 100 revisions, corrections and updates that have trickled in from numerous fans over the past three years. Also, Section 2.4 was changed from "IRC Chat" (which doesn't seem to be around any longer) to the new Jackson's Cafe "Bulletin Board".
Update 4.0 in January 1998 corrected a few minor errors and some general updating -- particularly where The Next Voice You Hear: The Best of Jackson Browne is concerned. Sections 2.4 through 2.7 have been added in and Section 10.3 has been newly updated and expanded.
THANK YOU to everyone who sent in corrections and additions. Please, send in your corrections and additions and any other suggestions you may have. This FAQ is for you, the fans!
1.3 THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME
On Monday, March 15, 2004, Jackson Browne was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum by his good friend Bruce Springsteen.
The 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame "Performer" inductees were Jackson Browne, the Dells, George Harrison, Prince, Bob Seger, Traffic and ZZ Top. VH1 broadcasted an edited version of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony on Sunday, March 21, 2004, showing all of Bruce Springsteen's speech, but only a portion of Jackson's acceptance speech.
Photos from the evening, the full text of Bruce Springsteen's speech introducing Jackson Browne, and the subsequent AP article about the induction ceremony are available at www.jrp-graphics.com/jb/rarhof.html.
Jackson's page at the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame's website is at: www.rockhall.com/hof/inductee.asp?id=2176.

The status of such newsgroup is at this time questionable.
2.3 JACKSON BROWNE INTERNET MAILING LIST
In August 1996, a Jackson Browne Internet Mailing List called "Everyman" was started by Elizabeth Anderson. After a number of months, it was taken over by Jeanine Claar, who ran it until it was moved to eGroups in May 2000. At the time of the move, the name "Everyman" was dropped in favor of "JacksonBrowne" in the hopes that more fans might find it. eGroups later merged into YahooGroups.
Since late 2000, the Jackson Browne Internet Mailing List has been hosted by YahooGroups.

2.5 JACKSON BROWNE FANZINE: "LATE FOR THE SKY"
Fans of Jackson Browne used to be able to subscribe to "Late For The Sky", a fanzine that contained all sorts of great Jackson Browne facts and interviews.
"Late For The Sky" was published by Brian Leahy out of Ireland. Brian is a longtime fan of Jackson's that took on this big task, publishsing 8 issues of "Late For The Sky" over a period of years. Issue #8 was released in August 1996.
At this time, "Late For The Sky" is no longer published.
2.6 THE TOP 10 (11) MOST ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT JACKSON BROWNE
- Who is the song "Of Missing Persons" about? (Often phrased as: "I've heard that the song 'Of Missing Persons' is about Jimmy Hoffa? Is this true?")
Answer: The song "Of Missing Persons" is about Jackson's good friend Lowell George who founded the band Little Feat. The song was written about Lowell, shortly after his death, for his daughter Inara. (Jackson is Inara's godfather.) In his earlier days, Jackson used to play the Lowell George song "Long Distance Love" at many of his concerts. A 1997 tribute album to Lowell contains Jackson's version of Lowell's song "I've Been The One".
- Who is the child sitting next to Jackson in the back of the bus/van/suv in the Going Home video while Jackson sings "Too Many Angels"?
Answer: Most commonly, people want to know if this is either of Jackson's two sons, Ethan or Ryan. The answer is "no". The child in this video is one of Jackson's nephews.
- Who is the song "That Girl Could Sing" about?
Answer: I've never seen Jackson answer this question directly. HOWEVER, there have been a number of occasions where Jackson has hinted that the answer is "Valerie Carter". For example, during a concert, Jackson once referred to the person in the song by saying that he knew exactly where she was at that moment, and Valerie Carter was onstage singing backup for him at the time. Valerie has been a backup singer for Jackson Browne and more often for James Taylor for many years. She's also released several excellent albums herself. Most fans seem to believe that she's the correct answer to that question and I'm inclined be agree.
- Where can I find the "No Nukes" video or soundtrack CD? (Sometimes phrased "I heard Jackson once performed a charity concert with Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Bonnie Raitt, The Doobie Brothers, Crosby Stills & Nash and many others. Where can I hear this?")
Answer: The CD of the NO NUKES concerts was released in the United States on October 21, 1997. This 2-CD set follows the same track list as the original 3-LP set. You can Purchase the CD here. The video is sometimes shown on VH-1 and can be purchased on VHS, but has never been released in DVD format. You can Purchase the VHS here. (Purchase of either CD or VHS still helps fund the No Nukes organization.)
- Where can I find Jackson Browne bootleg recordings? (Most often: "Will you sell/trade me a copy of that?")
Answer: Keep your eyes open. Unofficial releases are all over the place, but because they are generally illegal to manufacture or to sell in most countries they rarely show up in the CD racks at the large chain CD stores. Small independent record stores sometimes have these items. Also, larger cities often have record shows (record swap meets) that can turn up all sorts of gems.
PLEASE NOTE: Jackson has gone on record saying that he does not approve of the recording of his concerts, or the distribution of such recordings in any manner. However, if you are going to look for such material, please do it by trading and do not purchase such items from people looking to profit off of Jackson Browne's music.
- Is there a Jackson Browne biography? (Or "Where can I find the Jackson Browne biography?)
Answer: There was an UNofficial biography released in 1982. The author was Rich Wiseman. The title was Story Of A Holdout. The book has been out of print for more than 25 years and is VERY hard to find. Try a used book store; some have search services. Also, check your library. Jackson Browne is a very private individual and would like his fans to respect his privacy. The book was NOT authorized by him and Jackson feels that the author got his interviews in an unethical manner. (Because of this, you would be wise not to mention the book to him.)
A newer UNauthorized biography was released in May 2005. Jackson Browne: His Life And Music was written by Mark Bego. Again, this book was NOT authorized by Jackson Browne or his management. The author is someone who has written a great many biographies of famous musicians including Bonnie Raitt, Bette Midler, Jewel, Michael Jackson, and Cher to name just a few, but all of his research for this book appears to have come from secondary sources, and there are so many factual errors in the text that it can't be recommended to serious fans.
Because of the private nature of the individual, I think it unlikely that Jackson will ever write an autobiography, but it would be nice.
- What is the duet Jackson Browne did with Jann Arden? (Or "What is the duet Jackson Browne did with Timothy B. Schmidt?" Or "What is the duet Jackson Browne did with Jennifer Warnes?" Or "What is the duet Jackson Browne did with Kathy Mattea?")
Answer: Jackson has done many duets with other artists that are not available on any of his CDs. To collect them all, you'll have to purchase the CDs by the other artists. Jackson also has appeared as backup vocalist on dozens of other tracks. Here are some of the most popular "Rarities and Duets". Please note that this is NOT a complete list. Jackson and Shawn Covlin also make a guest vocal appearances on the Lyle Lovett CD, "The Road To Ensenada".
There was also a 1996 Australian CD called "Best of...Live" that contained more live Jackson Browne tracks. This was re-released in Japan in 1998. Look elsewhere in this web site for more information on that recording and check elsewhere in this FAQ for a more detailed listing of Jackson's appearance on other albums.
- What is "Shadow Dream Song"? (Also "What is the Nina Demo?")
Answer: Before Jackson Browne's first album came out in January 1972, he had been writing songs for many years. The two songs that got him the most attention in those early years were "These Days" and "Shadow Dream Song". "Shadow Dream Song" was never officially recorded and released by Jackson Browne but was covered by many other artists in the 1960s including The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Tom Rush, Nico and Steve Noonan.
In the late 1960s, Jackson recorded a bunch of demo tracks that were intended for use by Nina Music (the publishing division of Elektra Records) to showcase his songs for use by other artists. For some reason, these ended up being pressed into what amounted to a double LP -- with some songs by Steve Noonan filling out the 4th side. "Shadow Dream Song" is included. The Nina Demo has been greatly bootlegged, but before spending the money on an illegal copy consider that the sound quality is poor and that vocally, Jackson doesn't sound anything like Jackson.
- Is "Rosie" really about...? (And "Is 'Redneck Friend' really about...?)
Answer: YES. The song Rosie was co-written by Jackson and Donald "Buddha" Miller who is now Jackson's manager. The song is about someone who, after an evening of expectation, loses the girl and resorts to masturbation; Rosie is his HAND. If you still don't get it, listen to the words more closely: "you wear my ring" and "I've got to hand it to me". On the same topic, "Redneck Friend" is his penis (really). Lines like "the damage would do you good" kind of make that one more obvious. By the way, the keyboard player listed as "Rockaday Johnny" on "Redneck Friend" is really Elton John!
- Did Jackson Browne really beat up Darryl Hannah? (Also known as "the question that won't go away".)
Answer: NO. Both Jackson and Darryl have denied those old tabloid reports at one time or another. The fact is that Jackson telephoned the police that night. Police on the scene that night have also denied any such violence. The details of that infamous night will never be known by anyone except for the two parties involved. Jackson is a very private individual and we should all respect his desire for privacy. Whatever really happened that night is none of our business. To those who are stuck for an answer when someone raises the question, I usually respond with a statement about not believing what you read in the tabloids and being amazed how otherwise intelligent people can believe the kind of trash they read there.
This issue was raised again with respect to questions about Joni Mitchell's song "Not To Blame" from her 1994 album TURBULENT INDIGO, which not only accused Jackson of beating up Darryl Hannah but implies that he drove his first wife to suicide. Jackson's public response was that "Joni hasn't been very well and has lots of problems."
And unfortunately, the issue was raised yet again in a 2003 made for TV tabloid film about John F. Kennedy Jr., whom Darryl dated after breaking up with Jackson. Both Jackson and Darryl issued public statements against the show, with Darryl going so far as to say not one thing about any reference to her was accurate. Jackson threatened legal action if it was rebroadcast without editing out the reference to him. After investigating, the station offered public appologies for the error and deleted the scene from future broadcasts.
For a far more detailed analysis and reveiw of the facts, visit the Jackson Browne non-incident website.
- Why doesn't David Lindley perform with Jackson any more? (Sometimes phrased as "Did Jackson and David have a disagreement?")
Answer: I'm surprised every time this question comes up. I guess I shouldn't be. I've NEVER heard of a fallout between Jackson Browne and David Lindley. Jackson has always had loyalty to the people in his band, and some of them have performed with Jackson for very long periods of time. But everyone moves on.
In David Lindley's case, he moved on to a successful solo career and wanted to put more time into that. Lots of "side men" like Jackson's early bandmates David Lindley, Rosemary Butler and Doug Haywood have tried to move off into solo careers with varying degrees of success. Heck, Barry Manilow started off as a sideman for Bette Midler.
Freebo is doing very well as a solo artist after having backed Bonnie Raitt for a decade or so.
I would think that after watching someone else take the spotlight for years, it would only be normal for the backup artist to want to move up front once in a while... although some seem eternally happy in that backup role... Of Jackson's current band, both Mark Goldenberg and Jeff Young have done solo albums and almost everyone in the band performs with other artists. Kevin McCormick is currently backing Crosby Stills & Nash. Jeff Young toured with Steely Dan this year. Opportunities come, and you take them. It's the nature of the business.
Sometimes all the "backup artists" get together and form their own band: ie, The Section (which released a couple of LPs many years ago) or The Song & Dance Society which used to play together weekly when Jackson wasn't touring.
I think David Lindley liked heading his own band with El-Rayo X, and so he stopped performing with Jackson as part of his regular band. But they still perform together on occasion and even did a mini-tour together early last year (which was recorded for a possible release in 2008 or 2009).
Scott Thurston performs with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, so he doesn't perform with Jackson these days, but that doesn't mean that they had a falling out.
Sometimes following these backing musicians can bring you to really great new music. One example of these connections: Jackson's Inside Recordings label also releases music by Joel Rafael, whose career I've followed for many years. Jeff Berkley was the percussionist for the Joel Rafael Band for many years. Jeff moved on to form his own duo with a guy from San Diego, Calman Hart. Their band, Berkley Hart, is now one of my favorite acoustic duos -- right behind Lowen & Navarro. (Wonderful live performances.) You just never know.
One thing that never changes is that all things change.
2.7 WHERE CAN I FIND IT?
I am often asked "Where can I get a copy of the I'm The Cat CD single" or "How can I get a copy of the Australian only Best of...Live CD?"
One good place to find those hard to find Jackson Browne CDs is Music Machine, which is a reliable music mail order company out of Maryland. There are hundreds of CD stores on the Internet and looking for some rare, out of print item can take lots of time and research. Also, be sure to search eBay where all sorts or rare Jackson Browne related items pop up for sale.
If you are looking for sheet music, PLEASE try your local guitar, drum or piano store. Most of these stores carry sheet music and many will order sheet music for you at no extra charge. It is always nice to support your local merchants. There are places on the Internet as well. I have purchased sheet music from The Music Mart, Inc. Also, www.classicrocksheetmusic.com specialized in sheet music by Jackson Browne in "piano-only" format! You can find many other web sites that sell sheet music by doing a web search for "sheet music".
Another often asked question is "Where can I find Jackson Browne bootleg recordings?" The answer is: Keep your eyes open. Unofficial releases are all over the place, but because they are generally illegal to manufacture or to sell they rarely show up in the CD racks at the larger CD stores. Small independent record stores sometimes have these items. Also, larger cities often have record shows (record swap meets) that can turn up all sorts of gems. You might also subscribe to a record collector's magazine such as Goldmine. Magazines like these have dozens (hundreds) of pages of advertisements with many hard-to-find LPs and CDs.
One of the most common question I've received is "Where can I find Jackson Browne T-shirts?" Until recently the ONLY place you could purchase Jackson Browne T-shirts was at one of Jackson's concerts. In March 2005, Jackson Browne opened the very first Jackson Browne Store, where you can purchase his CDs online, through his website or at The Jackson Browne Store.
2.8 WHERE CAN I WRITE TO JACKSON?
Unfortunately, at this point in time there is no address where you can write to Jackson Browne. Several of his past albums have listed addresses where people could send fan mail, but it my understanding that these are all old addresses and not currently valid. Jackson does not have an email address.
I once overheard Jackson tell someone that the ONLY way to be sure he saw a letter was to hand it to him personally. Obviously not an easy task!
There is no official Jackson Browne Fan Club.
Suggestion for business correspondence: Try reaching Jackson through his management company, Donald Miller Management. But please don't waste your time or theirs by sending fan mail to them. They'll screen it all.
2.9 LATE FOR THE SKY RADIO - A Jackson Browne Internet Radio Station
A Jackson Browne Internet Radio Station called "Late For The Sky" Radio appeared a few years ago. This non-profit venture played all Jackson Browne all the time: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
This radio station vanished in early 2003 shortly after the US government decided to tax such ventures based upon listenership, and not revenue generated. As far as I know, no one has yet jumped in to fill the void.
3.0 BIOGRAPHY/CHRONOLOGY
Biography written by Russ Paris (There is a much more extensive, updated biography at: Jackson Browne Biography)
Jackson Browne's musical career of more than thirty years has reached the hearts and souls of millions of fans around the globe. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Jackson Browne's songs were recorded by artists such as Nico, Tom Rush, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Eagles, Bonnie Raitt, The Byrds and Gregg Allman. As a singer-songwriter in the early 1970s, Jackson's music and lyrics reached a more personal level than any of his peers while selling millions of albums and performing endless tours. Hit singles like "Doctor My Eyes", "Rock Me On The Water", "The Pretender" and "Running On Empty" are still staples of rock and roll radio.
Jackson Browne started the 1980s with a #1 album in Hold Out and the hit singles "Boulevard" and "That Girl Could Sing" and followed up with the Top 10 Hit "Somebody's Baby". As his political activism and social agenda seeped into his music, Jackson Browne quickly took on a leadership role as the social and moral consciousness of his generation. In the 1990s Jackson Browne continued to release music that reached his fans at a deeply emotional level -- with songs like "Sky Blue and Black" and "Everywhere I Go" -- while still responding to a value system that shows true caring for the world around him -- with songs such as the hits "Some Bridges" and "Alive In The World". In March 2004 Jackson Browne was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by his good friend, Bruce Springsteen.
Clyde Jackson Browne was born on October 9, 1948 in Heidelberg, Germany to Clyde Jack Browne and Beatrice Amanda "Bea" Dahl. He has three siblings: Roberta "Berbie" Browne who was born in 1946 in Nuremberg, Germany and Edward Severin Browne who was born in 1949 in Frankfurt, Germany. (Jackson's father was overseas with the American Army newspaper.) And his younger sister, Gracie, who was born a number of years later. Jackson also has two sons, Ethan Zane Browne, born November 2, 1973 in Los Angeles to Jackson's first wife, Phyllis Major, and Ryan Daniel Browne, born January 28, 1982 in Los Angeles to Jackson's second wife, Lynne Sweeney. (Since the question keeps coming up... Jackson has NOT remarried since his divorce from Lynn in the mid 1980s.)
(Like Jackson, his brother also goes by his middle name. Severin Browne is an outstanding singer-songwriter who was on the Motown label in the 1970s and has released some outstanding albums in recent years. More on Severin can be found in Section 9.1.1 of this FAQ.)
Jackson, the singer/guitarist/pianist/composer/political activist moved back to Los Angeles, California with his family in 1951. As a teenager, he played in an early version of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, which later performed some of his songs. He spent part of 1967 and 1968 in Greenwich Village, NY, where he backed Tim Buckley and Nico. By late the 1960s and early 1970s he had built up a reputation as a songwriter and had his songs recorded by The Byrds, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, the Eagles, and many others.
Jackson Browne's solo debut album "Jackson Browne," was released in January 1972 and produced the Top 10 hit single "Doctor My Eyes" and the classic song "Rock Me On The Water." The album quickly became known as "Saturate Before Using" due to the photograph that was used for the front cover. Although the album only peaked at #53 on Billboard's Top Pop Album charts it did eventually get certified Gold.
Jackson released his second album "For Everyman," only a year later. Although the album did marginally better on the charts, it yielded a minor hit in "Red Neck Friend" and contained the classic songs "Take It Easy," "These Days," and "For Everyman." The song "Take It Easy" was co-written by Glenn Fry of the Eagles and was top 20 hit for the Eagles in 1972 -- their first charted single.
Jackson's son Ethan was born in 1973 and may have inspired him to some of the recordings on his third album "Late For The Sky," which is often cited as his best album. (In recent fan polls, "Late For The Sky" easily outdistanced his other albums for being the favorite album among fans.) Each and every song on this album, produced by Jackson Browne and Al Schmitt, is a finely crafted piece of art. Although the album produced no hit singles, it does contain many classic songs such as "Late For The Sky," "Fountain Of Sorrow," "For A Dancer" and "Before The Deluge." The album was released in 1974 and is currently available in a "remastered" 24 Karat Gold CD from DCC Compact Classics.
Three years after his son's birth, Jackson's wife Phyllis committed suicide. The emotional toll clearly shows in the melodies and lyrics of his fourth album, "The Pretender," although most of the songs on that album were written before the suicide. The release of "The Pretender" in 1976 gave Jackson Browne his first top ten album and yielded the hit songs "Here Come Those Tears Again," "The Fuse," and "The Pretender." The album was released in a limited edition audiophile version by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs, which in mint condition can go for more than $30 today.
"Running On Empty," was released in 1978 and is a landmark album in many ways. The album was recorded while on tour, but is not merely a live album. It's an album of all new songs that gives the real feel of what it's like to be on tour. The title track went to number eleven on Billboard's Hot 100 Chart and "The Load Out/Stay" was another top 20 hit. Running On Empty was a milestone in another way: it clearly showed that Jackson Browne was moving away from his folk rock roots and more toward the rock and roll he loves. "Running On Empty" remains a mainstay of the playlist for any rock and roll oriented radio station.
Jackson entered the 1980s with the album "Hold Out," which entered the charts and went straight to #1. The songs "Boulevard" and "That Girl Could Sing" both hit the top 40. The album was followed by the hit single "Somebody's Baby" from the soundtrack to Fast Times At Ridgemont High. "Somebody's Baby" reached #7 on the Hot 100, becoming Jackson's highest charting single.
Jackson's 7th album "Lawyers In Love," was his 4th straight top 10 album. The songs clearly showed the direction his music would take for the rest of the decade: rock and roll with a political twist. While the singles "Lawyers In Love" and "Tender Is The Night" hit the top 40, it was the song "For A Rocker" that showed where Jackson Browne's musical interests were heading.
"Lives In The Balance," contains some of the most sophisticated musical arrangements Jackson has attempted. The songs weave the political landscape of America into the fabric of 1980s rock and roll. The songs "For America" and "In The Shape Of A Heart" were the hit singles from what is probably the best (and most under-rated) album of the 1980s.
Jackson Browne's next album "World In Motion" is his most political. While many of his critics longed for his earlier "more personal" songs, Jackson pointed out that "nothing is more personal than your political beliefs." A real highlight of the album is Jackson's rendition of the Little Steven song "I Am A Patriot."
While his later albums have focused on his political and social activities, his tenth album, "I'm Alive," brought him full circle, returning him to his roots as a singer and songwriter who can touch his fans with his deep sense of feeling and expression. The album features the songs "I'm Alive," "Sky Blue And Black" and "Everywhere I Go." The album was released in 1993 and was produced by Jackson Browne and Scott Thurston.
His most recent studio album, "Looking East," was released on February 13, 1996. "The Barricades Of Heaven" is reminicient of his work on Late For The Sky, while the song "Information Wars" could have been from World In Motion. The song writing credits on Looking East are striking in that most of the songs on the album were were written by Jackson Browne and his band. This album is one of his strongest both musically and lyrically -- from the playfulness of "I'm The Cat" to the stirring emotions of "Alive In The World" to the driving beat of "Culver Moon". The album is also available in an Enhanced CD format, which can bring Jackson Browne right into your computer. The Enhanced CD contains interview footage of Jackson and his band, including Jackson's comments on each song on the new album. (Having problems with the Enhanced CD? Go to The ECD Help Page.)

1996 saw the release of Jackson Browne's first full length feature video. Released in April 1996, Jackson Browne: Going Home is a chronicle of Jackson's remarkable career. Jackson Browne: Going Home contains interviews, performances and rare footage spanning twenty-five years featuring Don Henley, Bonnie Raitt, David Crosby, Graham Nash, The Eagles, David Lindley, Jennifer Warnes and many more. Originally broadcast in August 1994 on The Disney Channel, now this wonderful video is available in a store near you!
November 1996 marked the limited edition release of the "Jackson Browne: Tour Collection", an Australian limited edition 2-CD set featuring the "Looking East" CD plus an exclusive 11-song CD called: "Best of... Live". The collection came with a copy of the "Looking East" CD along with an exclusive 11-song CD of live hits recording during the 1994 and 1996 tours. Beautifully recorded, these songs give his fans updated versions of hits like "Doctor My Eyes", "For A Dancer", "Take It Easy", "The Pretender", "Running On Empty", "Somebody's Baby" and "Before The Deluge". Although this Best of...Live CD is now out of print, a similar 2-CD collection is scheduled for limited release in Japan in early 1998 featuring the Next Voice You Hear: The Best of Jackson Browne CD and the Best of...Live CD together in one package.
January 1997 marked the 25th anniversary of the release of Jackson's debut album! Twenty five years of great music have led to some of the most devoted fans in music today. Jackson Browne's music has evolved over that time into the best sophisticated adult oriented rock going in the 1990s. To mark the 25th anniversary of his debut album, Elektra Entertainment released "The Next Voice You Hear: The Best Of Jackson Browne" in September 1997. The album is a retrospective covering Jackson's entire recording history and includes two new tracks recorded during 1997.
Jackson's most recent studio release is the 2002 album The Naked Ride Home which was released to much critical acclaim and showcases Jackson at his best, along with the incredibly talented band that has been with him for nearly ten years. More than 30 years after the release of his debut album, Jackson's voice has never sounded stronger and his songwriting continues to shine with thought-provoking and heart-felt lyrics that others still strive to match.
On March 15, 2004 Jackson Browne was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by his good friend Bruce Springsteen. To mark the occasion, the following day, Rhino records released a 2-CD set called The Very Best of Jackson Browne, with 32 tracks from 1972-1992. This is a great collection of some of the best of Jackson Browne's music over more than 30 years.
Jackson is highly respected among his peers in the music industry for both his musical gifts and his integrity. He spends much of his time helping various causes that he truly believes in. As Bruce Springsteen put it during his speech at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions: "Listen to the chord changes of 'Rock Me On the Water' and 'Before the Deluge,' it's gospel through and through. Now I always thought that... our job here on earth, the way we regain our divinity, our sacredness, and our general good-standing is by reconstructing love and creating love out of the broken pieces that we've been given. That's all we have of human promise. That's the way we prove ourselves in the eyes of God and facilitate our own redemption. Now, to me Jackson Browne's work was always the sound of that reconstruction." Thank you, Jackson, for a creating the soundtrack to our lives.

4.6 MISCELLANEOUS WORK
- During the "I'm Alive" era -- not too long ago, now -- Jackson Browne participated in a project on behalf of Scholastic, the educational publisher. It was called "Write Lyrics," and involved the distribution of a cassette featuring an exclusive interview with Jackson Browne and several songs (including live never-before-released versions of "World In Motion" and Doctor My Eyes") to middle schools and high schools across the U.S.A.
- The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame had an exhibit during the mid 1990s featuring Jackson Browne talking about the songwriting process which featured the song "Sky Blue and Black." On the wall in a case were his legal pad written notes of the lyrics and many photos. Headphones were there to listen to Jackson explain the evolution of the music/lyrics that he and Scott Thurston went though to get to the final version.
- Just because... "The Next Voice You Hear" (the name of Jackson's "Best Of" collection and the title track) is the name of a 1950 movie in which God broadcasts an appeal for peace over the radio. The stars are James Whitmore and Nancy Davis (Reagan). There is also a song of the same title done by country music superstar Hank Snow in 1955.
- A book released in Holland, "Twee Meter Sessies," takes a look behind the scenes of the radio/tv-show "Twee Meter Sessies" (a kind of Unplugged show). Jackson Browne was there in 1994 and this book has a chapter about Jackson almost missing the session due to traffic jams. Also released is a 2CD with CD Rom track. The ROM track lists all Twee Meter Sessies ever and has a lot of pictures. Jackson is also on there.
- A 3-CD Rom Music Anthology titled "Forrest Gump -- Music, Artists and Friends" includes more than 30 exclusive interviews including one with Jackson Browne. The song "Running On Empty appeared in the movie, but was not included in the Soundtrack CD.
- Jackson Browne's music was used in a film called "The Secret Government" (1987) which was narrated by Bill Moyers and shown on PBS. "Lives in the Balance" was played in the beginning and end of the film. The film shows interviews with many different people involved with the CIA and other government agencies and gives quite an overview of what has actually happened in the last 50 years regarding the CIA and the cold war (including Iran, Guatamala, Cuba, Viet Nam and Chile). 90 minutes.

Since 1995, nearly every concert Jackson has performed at has been bootlegged by one or more sources. The advent of minidiscs, DAT Recorders and similar miniaturized recording devices have made bootlegging so commonplace, that there is no practical way to list every recording since that time.
The invention of CD-ROM burners also made it possible to record copies without any loss of sound quality from the original masters. There is often no way to differentiate between various recordings of a single show, some of which are better quality than others.
PLEASE NOTE: Jackson has gone on record saying that he does not approve of the recording of his concerts, or the distribution of such recordings in any manner. However, if you are going to look for such material, please do it by trading and do not purchase such items from people looking to profit off of Jackson Browne's music.
4.8 EARLY UNRELEASED RECORDINGS
Before Jackson Browne released his debut album in January 1972, he had been writing songs, performing and recording for a number of years. ("These Days" was written in late 1964 or early 1965.) From these "early years" there are 4 major recording sessions of note:
1. The Nina Demo (1967)
2. The Paxton Lodge Sessions / The Baby Browning album (1968)
3. The Criterion Demos (1970)
4. The London Sessions (1971)
These are not the only recording sessions that Jackson was involved in prior to the release of his debut album, but these are the most significant. Here is some information about each of these sessions:
1. The Nina Demo (1967)
In 1966, Jackson Browne was signed by Nina Music Company -- the publishing arm of Elektra Records -- as a songwriter. On January 7, 1967, Jackson Browne stepped into the studio to make some demos of his songs for Nina Music. The idea was to showcase Jackson's songs to various artists on the Elektra roster. For some reason, Nina Music pressed thirty of Jackson's songs -- along with ten of Steven Noonan's songs -- onto two LPs. (Actually only about 2/3 of the songs were from the 1967 recording session at Jaycino Studio in New York. The rest were from a Columbia session on October 5, 1966.)
The "Nina Demo" has become somewhat legendary and infamous among Jackson's fans as his first "unreleased" album, but it never was intended to be an album release (much less an album); it was merely Jackson Browne and his guitar making some 2-track tapes in his role as a staff writer for Nina Music, the music publishing arm of Elektra Records. The recordings were to be used to pitch his songs to other artists on the Elektra label.
Here is the track list of Jackson's songs from The Nina Demo:
Disk 1, Side 1:
- Holding (Browne)
- Somewhere There's A Feather (Browne)
- I've Been Out Walking (Browne)
- Funny You Should Ask (Browne)
- Love Me, Lovely (Browne)
- You've Forgotten (Browne)
- Someday Morning (Browne)
- Cast Off All My Fears (Browne)
- In My Time (Browne)
- Melissa (Browne)
Disk 1, Side 2:
- It's Been Raining Here In Long Beach (Browne)
- You'll Get It In The Mail Today (Browne)
- Shadow Dream Song (Browne)
- The Light From Your Smile (Browne)
- Gotta See A Man About A Daydream (Jackson Browne & Greg Copeland)
- Time Travel Fantasy (Jackson Browne & Pamela Polland)
- The Fairest Of The Seasons (Jackson Browne & Greg Copeland)
- Sing My Songs To Me (Browne)
- Lavender Windows (Browne)
- The Painter (Browne)
Disk 2, Side 1:
- Fourth And Main (Browne)
- Bound For Colorado (Browne)
- We Can Be (Browne)
- And I See (Browne)
- Ah, But Sometimes (Browne)
- Marianne (Browne)
- Tumble Down (Browne)
- You Didn't Need A Cloud (Browne)
- Lavender Bassman (Browne)
- She's A Flying Thing (Browne)
All songs written by Jackson Browne (except where noted) and copyrighted 1967 by Nina Music Company; Open Window Music/Companion Music. Lyrics to all of these songs can be found at: www.jrp-graphics.com/jb/nina.html
2. The Paxton Lodge Sessions (1968)
In 1968, Elektra sent Jackson Browne up to Paxton, California in what was to be known as Elektra Music Ranch. The idea was to start a musical community in a vacant resort where the artistic environment would inspire artists to greater creative heights. (The whole idea was inspired by the recording of The Band's "Music From the Big Pink" album.) By all accounts, it was a nice party, but little real work got done. Elektra tried to cut its loses by getting a combined record out of Jackson, Jack Wilce, Rolf Kempf, and Ned Doheny. They named themselves Baby Browning (after a tombstone in a cemetery they stumbled across near Paxton Lodge) and recorded an album, which was rejected by the label.
There is a wonderful book about Elektra Records called Follow the Music: The Life and High Times of Elektra Records in the Great Years of American Pop Culture by Jac Holzman (founder of Elektra Records). The book has a chapter or two devoted to the whole Paxton Lodge project including extensive interviews with all the people involved. It makes for some great reading.
Here is the track list of the unreleased Baby Browning album:
Side A:
- Instrumental (Jack Wilce)
- Hello Hurray (Rolf Kempf
- Won't You Come See Me? (Kempf)
- Momma: Mamma (Kempf)
- Dizzy Hymns Of Pain (Kempf)
- Apple Pie, Mother And The Flag (Wilce)
Side B:
- Dancing Sam (Jackson Browne)
- From Silverlake (Browne)
- Another Place (Browne)
- Sandy's Oyster (Kempf)
- Got A Feeling (See It Fade Away) (Kempf)
The three Jackson Browne songs were all later recorded for the Criterion Demos.
(Having heard the record, I'd call it a great period piece and not nearly as bad as legend has made it out to be. Hopefully someone will get around to releasing this legendary gem someday.)
3. The Criterion Demos (1970)
Jackson signed a co-publishing agreement with Hollywood's Criterion Music in the fall of 1969, so these demos from April 6, 1970 are just prior to his hooking up with David Geffen, which took place later in 1970, and the recording of his first album which took place in 1971.
In fact, it was a demo of "Jamaica Say You Will" from the recording session at Criterion Studios -- which Jackson sent to David Geffen -- that attracted Geffen's attention. The track included backing by J.D. Souther (on drums?), Glenn Frey, and Ned Doheny.
This was not an official album, nor was it ever intended as an official release. It was merely Jackson Browne making some demo recordings in his role as a staff writer for Criterion Music. These recordings were intended to be used to promote Jackson's songs to other artists for recording.
Here is the track list of Jackson's songs from The Criterion Music Demos:
- Last Time I Was Home
- Jamaica Say You Will
- Song for Adam
- Doctor My Eyes
- Low Road
- Door into the Morning
- Another Place
- The Birds of St. Marks
- Mae Jean Goes to Hollywood
- Gone to Sorrow
- Hot Like Today
- A Child in These Hills
- The Top
- My Opening Farewell
- The Times You've Come
- From Silverlake
- Some Kind Of Friend
- There Came a Question
- Have I Seen Her?
- Colors of The Sun
- Dancing Sam
- Taking So Long
All songs written by Jackson Browne and copyrighted 1970 by Jackson Browne and Criterion Music. Lyrics to all of these songs can be found at: www.jrp-graphics.com/jb/criterion.html
4. The London Sessions (1971)
The story is that Jackson sent a demo tape and a glossy photo to David Geffen who was currently managing Laura Nyro, Crosby Stills & Nash and Joni Mitchell. David Geffen tossed the package in his trashcan where it was found by his secretary who liked the photograph. After listening to the tape, she managed to get David Geffen to listen to it. He, of course, was amazed.
David Geffen sent Jackson on tour with Laura Nyro and began making plans to start his own record label, where Jackson's first album could be released. Jackson's 1971 tour with Nyro finished up in London. He then went into a studio in London to start work on his debut album. Producer Denny Cordell (of Joe Cocker's band and Procol Harem) was at the helm with a band that included veterans such as Chris Stainton (piano, guitar), Jim Keltner (drums), Albert Lee (guitar) and even Leon Russell, who played piano on "Jamaica Say You Will."
It seems that Denny Cordell was hoping the record might be put out on Shelter Records. But when David Geffen officially founded Asylum Records and signed Jackson to the label, these sessions came to a halt. Jackson started re-recording his debut album in the summer of 1971 back in Los Angeles. None of the tracks from the London sessions were used.
Unfortunately, I have no other details about the London Sessions, have never heard them, and don't have a list of what songs were recorded other than "Jamaica Say You Will." If anyone does have information on these sessions, please let me know.

5.2 RADIO
Most every one of Jackson's radio appearances have been bootlegged and appear above under section 4.7 - Bootleg Concerts & Radio Interview Shows.
5.3 TV APPEARANCES
Again, most every one of Jackson's television appearances appear above under section 4.5.1 - VIDEO CONCERTS or section 5.1 CONCERTS TV. Here are a few highlights and a couple that didn't make it into those other sections.
1973 - "California Jam" - There was a big concert in Ontario, California called "California Jam" which included a performance of the Eagles. Don Felder's wife went into labor that day and Jackson Browne stood in at the last moment. Highlights of this show were shown the following year on ABC-TV's "In Concert".
1974 - "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" segment on the Eagles featured guest performances by Jackson Browne and Linda Ronstadt.
1977 - "Saturday Night Live" Jackson appeared on SNL on September 24, 1977 (Episode#71). He sang "Running On Empty" and "The Pretender".
1989 - "Arsenio Hall Show" Jackson appeared as a guest on the Arsenio Hall Show and sang two songs, one with Bonnie Raitt.
7/10/90 - "Late Night with David Letterman" Jackson appeared as a guest. Jackson was on David Letterman's show twice in 1994; once in February and then again not long after. The first time, he just sang I'm Alive with a backup band; the second time was right after a concert he did in New York and I believe he actually sat and talked to Letterman. I'm sorry--I don't have the dates, but I'm certain that the first appearance was in February 1994.
1994? - "The Whoopi Goldberg Show" Jackson Browne appeared as a guest on the short lived Whoopi Goldberg Show, for a 1/2 hour interview. Excellent.
1994 - Jackson appeared twice on David Letterman's show during 1994. The first one was in February and the second was shortly after. The first time he just sang "I"m Alive" with a backup band and the second time he sat and talked for a short bit.
1995 - Jackson Browne appeared during the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame dedication show, which was televised live.
11/22/95 TNT broadcast "The Wizard of Oz in Concert" with artists such as Roger Daltry as the Tinman, JACKSON BROWNE AS THE SCARECROW, Nathan Lane as the Cowardly Lion, Jewel as Dorothy, Natalie Cole as Glinda the Good Witch, Debra Winger as the Wicked Witch and Joel Grey as the Wizard of Oz. The video of the show is commercially available through TNT Home Video. The soundtrack is available on Rhino Records, including Jackson's delightfully whimsical versin of "If I Only Had A Brain.
1995Jackson Browne also appeared on Bonnie Raitt's "Road Tested" CD and the video of the performance. This show was also show on T.V. and is available on video.
1995 - The Wizard Of Oz in Concert

6.0 TOUR INFORMATION
CONCERT AND TOUR INFORMATION
Jackson Browne's newest album The Naked Ride Home was released on September 24, 2002. Jackson toured in support of that release -- both solo acoustic and with his band -- through most of 2003 and 2004.
Jackson planed to spend most of 2005 in the studio working on a new CD and indication was there would be only a few scattered benefit appearances this year.
Please check the Concerts section of this website for the most updated information as well as tour information from previous years.
7.0 BIBLIOGRAPHY
7.1 Biographies
No authorized biographies have been released about Jackson Browne and he has not released an autobiography either. However, there have been several unauthorized biographies released against Jackson's wishes.
1. The first biography that was published on Jackson Browne has been out of print for quite some time. As an unauthorized biography, Jackson Browne has gone on record against the book. He has said it has many "guesses and inaccuracies" and is of the opinion that the author used unethical means to obtain his interviews.
The title was: Jackson Browne: The Story Of A Hold Out written by Rich Wiseman and published by Dolphin Books in 1982. ISBN# 0-385-17830-1; Library of Congress Catalog# 81-43743
2. The second biography to be released about Jackson Browne was released in the summer of 2002 in Germany. This book is written in German and was not authorized by Jackson. Not being able to read German, I don't know much else about the book.
The title is: Jackson Browne: Everywhere I Go - A Biography written by Manfred Schwanbeck and published by Sonnentanz in July 2002. ISBN: 3926794364
3. The third biography to be released about Jackson Browne is to be released in the spring or summer of 2005. This book was not authorized by Jackson and was written by biographer Mark Bego who has written biographies on a number of music celebrities including George Strait, Cher, Tina Tuner, Bette Midler, Bonnie Raitt and many others.
The title is: Jackson Browne: His Life and Music written by Mark Bego and published by Citadel Press in May 2005 (?). ISBN: 0806526424

8.0 FAMILY
8.1 PHYLLIS MAJOR
Jackson met Phyllis Major in the early 1970s. The song "Ready Or Not" is loosely based on their meeting at The Troubadour where Jackson got into a fight over her. They moved in together, got married, and their son Ethan was born shortly after.
In early 1976, Phyllis committed suicide. The album The Pretender was recorded shortly after and contains much of the emotion from this period. However, it should be noted that -- according to Jackson -- most of the songs for the album were written before Phillis' death. Phyllis's mother is Nancy Farnworth who is given credit for co-writing the song "Here Come Those Tears Again."
8.2 LYNNE SWEENEY
Jackson met Lynne Sweeney in Brisbaine, Australia during The Pretender tour. The Hold Out album is dedicated to her. They moved in together, got married, and their son Ryan was born shortly after.
Jackson and Lynne divorced in the mid 1980s and she moved back to Australia.
8.3 ETHAN BROWNE
Jackson's oldest son Ethan Zane Browne was born November 2, 1973 in Los Angeles. He appeared with Jackson on the cover of the May 1974 issue of Rolling Stone magazine.
Ethan is a very popular model, DJ, and upcoming actor. He has appeared in print ads for a variety of products including Tommy Jeans and has had small parts in the movies Hackers (as Curtis - 1995) and Raising Helen (as Devon - 2004).
8.4 RYAN BROWNE
Jackson's younger son Ryan Daniel Browne was born January 28, 1982 in Los Angeles. After his parents divorced, he was raised primarily in Australia. Ryan is a musician and did have a band for a time.

10.1 WHERE TO FIND JACKSON BROWNE'S ALBUMS
All 14 of Jackson Browne's officially released albums are currently available in your local CD store.
10.2 FAN MAIL
Jackson Browne has no current address for fan mail. (The addresses in the liner notes of the "I'm Alive" and "Looking East" CDs are no longer current and are NOT being forwarded.)
