CD REVIEW: "Love Is Strange"

Hey, Russ, loved your review of "Love is Strange." Of course, I got it the day it came out. :)

I'm dying to know what he's saying in Spanish. Has anyone translated his narrative into English? I want to soak in every word. Thanks for any help you can provide!

My Spanish is not that good. Maybe someone who can translate well for everyone will send in something I can post. Anyone?

SPANISH TRANSLATION: "Love Is Strange"

Russ,

I've attached a translation of Jackson's Spanish introductions to the songs on Love is Strange.

All the best,

1.1 Hello. Thanks for coming.

1.2 It's a great pleasure to be here in Oviedo with a great Asturian, Tino di Geraldo. And a very good friend and partner, the maestro, David (Spanish pronunciation) Lindley.

1.6 Well, now please welcome my very, very good friend Carlos Nuñez. This song is a little old from the sixties, an anti-war song.

1.8 Well, a song from one of David's albums, a song about a car that's called "Mercury 49".

1.10 This song is another of David's. It was written by Jorge Calderón and David. It's a song in well, it's not, well it's Spanish but I'm not sure what type of Spanish. It's Spanish from California, but via Puerto Rico or Tijuana I don't know.

David says: Mexican from the north.

Yeah, it's a little Mexican. The main thing is, it's true. It's called "El Rayo X" (the X Ray).

1.13 This is a song that was written by a great friend, Glenn Frey of The Eagles.

2.2 Thank you very much. And now I'd like to introduce a good friend of ours from Barcelona, my very good friend Javier Mas. Javier plays an instrument that's called a bandurria.

2.4 Now it's a great pleasure to introduce my very good friend, long-time friend, Kiko Veneno. Kiko. Also we want to get Raúl Rodríguez from Kiko's band. Raúl. And Charlie Cepeda. Charlie.

Kiko says: This is a great day. A great day, yes. A great day for Barcelona, for Betis (a football club in Seville), for Spain, for the world. Thank you America as well.

Yes. Well, for the world. This is Kiko's version of a very famous Eagles song called "Take It Easy". What's it called?

Kiko: "Tu tranquilo" (Take It Easy)

2.6 And now would you please welcome a really good friend, Luz Casal.

Luz says: Good evening.

2.8 Well, first of all thank you, thank you for coming. Many thanks to you for coming tonight, making us feel at home. I'd like to thank all the great friends of mine, the players, everybody that came and joined this bill. Primarily for the first time I really have to thank Tino di Geraldo for making this music happen. A maestro, a maestro. My long-time friend and compatriot, David Lindley.

2.11 Kiko. We have one more song. Javier. Javier Mas. Carlos Nuñez. Raúl Rodríguez. Charlie Cepeda. Kiko Veneno.

CD REVIEW: "Love Is Strange"

Thank you for your perspective on the review of the new record, Russell.

I was listening to it driving across a part of Australia last night, and I truly think his vocal on Late For The Sky is actually better than the original.

Big call, I know, but I'm serious.

I always thought that piece was near perfect, but there is a certain wear in that delivery that finally sounds like it has made it to where it should have been. Funny, but I never realised how effective that song could have been until I heard this, thirty years down the track.

Kind regards

CD REVIEW: "Love Is Strange"

A letter for the JB fan site

I gave the new release a listen this weekend and have some thoughts about both it and some comments others have made about it. I would encourage readers to take a look at Russ' detailed review as well.

First, I like having the physical product complete with liner notes and the nifty "flip book" packaging. I enjoyed reading a bit about how the tour came together and how the guest musicians came to be included. I enjoyed the imagery of the stream of the music that is always there and the notion that this recording can be a bridge or door connecting Spain and America. Jackson's participation in some of these friend's recordings and their contributions to the Spanish album of Jackson covers had already started that process.

Secondly, it is nice to have an official release of Jackson's music presented with these types of arrangements. Yes, one can hear some of this material elsewhere but the musicians involved really should reserve the right to present what they consider their best effort.

Thirdly, some of the songs that stood out for me were "I'm Alive" with the sweet Hawaiian guitar and grooving cajon, "Looking East" with the oud and tablas extending the concept of east beyond our shores to that of the eastern world (as Russ had also noted), dancing my "Mercury Blues" away, and how "Sit Down Servant" reminds me of their early days playing this cover together. I guess in some ways "For Taking The Trouble" could also be heard as a nod to the non-concert elements in the first live album these two released (Running On Empty).

Finally, Jackson's Spanish friends bring some good things to these songs. Especially Javier Mas' playing on "Your Bright Baby Blues". There has been some disappointment expressed over the tracks featuring Kiko and Luz (people wishing for two more tracks emphasizing Jackson and David instead) but I join Russ it hearing them as Jackson inviting us to meet some friends and to finally hear the song Jackson would mention so often during solo shows ("Tu Tranquilo").

As much as I would prefer new songs over what is now three albums of older material with newer arrangements, I don't mind having a "record" of a concert experience for those days when I'm in the mood for a virtual show.

Thanks, Jackson, David, and guests.

CD REVIEW: "Love Is Strange"

Russ, thank you for your great work running this site.

Jackson and David are a perfect combination-obviously they have a long and deep friendship and are an ideal musical partnership. Jackson's liner notes on the new album are lovely-the reference to "the stream of music that is always there for David and me" pretty much sums up the chemistry between two great musicians. For me this album is all about the joy of playing music with friends. It's yet another inspirational Jackson Browne album-makes me look forward to playing some music with my friends! Well done Jackson and thank you for this gorgeous album. I hope to get the chance to see JB and David on their UK tour next month.

CD REVIEW: "Love Is Strange"

Just got my copy. Pure magic when Lindley picks up his violin. That version of These Days sung by Luz Casal. well, it's more than just a little bit sexy.

GENERAL FAN COMMNETS:

Hi Russ- I enjoyed your review of Love is Strange. There was a lot of good guitar playing. My wife and I were happy to hear familiar songs with a little flair. She has been a fan for over 30 years and her birthday is May 30th. Sue will be fifty and it would be fun for her if anyone reading this wants to write a birthday greeting from one Jackson fan to another. Thanks for all you do on this site.

GENERAL FAN COMMNETS:

I have been searching through my old VHS tapes (with no luck) for a performance of "Doctor My Eyes" by Jackson & David Lindley. I recall it was from a regular live concert TV show series here in Australia called Rock Arena but was just one song inserted in that night's show. It had been filmed somewhere with just Jackson & David on tour. The one thing I recall more than anything was that there were several acoustic guitars lying around on the stage between Jackson on piano (stage right) and David sitting on the opposite side of the stage (so Jackson on the left of the TV screen and David on the right) and I wished I could have seen more of their concert.

I think that as it was just the two of them on stage it was either a benefit show or very early on in their touring days. It was just the one song edited into an hour long program. I have been trawling through youtube today trying to find it with no success so thought I would contact you as you seem to have great recall of many archival moments

kind regards

I have no record of this appearance on Rock Arena. Does anyone have more details so that I can add it to the FAQ?

Hi Russ,

I'm very glad to tell you that I've created the first Italian Page dedicated to Jackson Browne in Facebook. My idea was to share all the recent news about Jackson here in Italy where we're a lot of persons loving JB's music. At this moment, we're about 105 persons talking about Jackson's song and activities(in just one month of activity of the page). It would be great for me if you wanted to link my jackson's facebook page in your beautiful site.

I follow your precious work in your site since 1999!!!!! Thanks a lot for you passion doing that!!!

Sorry for my English....
